How Singapore's Carbon Tax Affects Individuals and Households
Carbon tax doesn't only affect businesses. It can also influence everyday living costs. In Episode 4 of GreenCo's Carbon Tax series, we explain how Singapore's carbon tax may indirectly affect individuals and households, mainly through electricity tariffs and other costs passed along the supply chain.
What You'll Learn in This Video
- How power companies may pass on carbon tax costs to consumers
- The estimated impact on household utility bills
- How rebates and government monitoring help reduce the burden on households
Carbon Tax and Your Utility Bill
According to Singapore's National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS), every S$5/tCO2e increase in the carbon tax could raise electricity tariffs by about 1% on average. The increase to S$25/tCO2e was estimated to add about S$4 a month to utility bills for an average 4-room HDB flat. The government has provided additional U-Save rebates to help households cope with these costs.
Understanding how carbon pricing works helps everyone make smarter, more sustainable choices, from energy use at home to the products and services we buy.
